How can I get smells out of plastic dishes?

sitsinfish asked:

I have trouble getting smells out of plastic dishes — in particular, plastic coffee mugs. They seem to absorb smell very quickly, and after only a couple uses, if I try drinking anything other than coffee out of them I can still taste the coffee!

This is especially a problem when my housemates leave food in dishes instead of washing them immediately — coffee mugs, plastic drinking glasses, tupperware, etc.

I have found that normal dish soap can leave behind a “soapy” taste/smell in plastic dishes, so I have switched to an unscented dish soap. But no dish soap I’ve used has effectively rescued plastic coffee mugs and other dishes like this.

Other than NOT using plastic dishes, how can I extend the life of the dishes and keep them from getting smelly… without leaving behind a chemical smell/taste that’s even worse?

Thanks for any advice.

I bought a plastic cooking bowl.
It had some stickers I teared off but still has some glue residue on it.
The plastic bowl is for cooking or putting food on it, so I can’t rub it with alcohol.

I recently purchased a plastic water dispenser and it’s been making the water test funny. I have cleaned it out several times with water like it says on the instruction manual but the water still tastes funny. I am guessing it is because that it is made of plastic. Does anyone know what causes this and how I can get rid of the funny taste?

How do I get hair gel off plastic glasses?

I have a pair of dark plastic glasses. I use very strong hair gel…almost like glue, and it always rubs on to my plastic frames. The lenses are fine, but the frames have a white glueish film on them. The only way I’ve been able to get it off is by scraping. I don’t want to continue because it will ruin the frames and there will be a ton of uneven scrapes on it. I tried rubbing it down with rubbing alcohol and Dial hand soap. After using the dial, it seemed like I made it worse…as if I rubbed the soap in or something. I can’t seem to find a liquid to help remove it. What’s my best way to get rid of it? I read that using vinegar is not good on plastic frames. I was thinking about getting the finest piece of sandpaper I can find (about 1000) and just sanding it off very carefully. Any other thoughts?

Thanks in advance!

How do I remove the plastic smell and taste from a coffeemaker?

I have a new black and decker coffeemaker, all plastic, including the carafe. It has a very noticeable plastic smell and taste to the coffee, just about undrinkable. Have run vinegar through it several times, washed several times, water through several times, baking soda too. Still there after several pots of coffee too. Any ideas? Throw it away? My husband thinks it is tolerable, but I cannot drink it. And I don’t think it can be at all good for you, if not harmful. (the plastic fumes, not the coffee) :) Thanks.

xo_mar_ox asked:

My sister made me a wall hanging using plastic canvas and yarn. I would like to know how to clean it without destroying it. It took her a long time to complete and it has sentimental value. I called the local dry cleaners and they said, “The plastic will melt.” Well, DUH!!! If you have sucessfully cleaned a plastic canvas wall art, please tell me how…. It is not on a frame of any type, no wood or cardboard backing…Mine is dingy and I would like to make it look better. Thanks in advance.

I wonder if it’s ok to wash these plastic containers for food storage as well as the yogurt, margarine, creme cheese, peanut butter containers etc…We sometimes reuse these containers or wash them before putting them in the recycling bin. The reason I’m asking is: I wonder if they give off toxic fumes because of the high heat.
